Fundamental Legal Conceptions: As Applied in Judicial Reasoning
Published in Hardcover by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. (January, 2001)
Average review score:

An early book on Deontic Logic, from 1913 Yale Law JournalThis book is a reprint of two Yale Law Journal articles from 1913 and 1917, and the 1964 reprint was a republication of the 1919 edition. The author, Professor Wesley Newcomb Hohfeld, distinguished four different types of "legal relations" or "rights" including right-duty; privileges; powers and immunities. The last two relate to the ability to create or discharge the first two. The results have been explained by Arthur Corbin, see especially 29 Yale L. J. 163 (1919) and reprinted in Jerome Hall, Readings in Jurisprudence (1938); Layman Allen (1998 Notre Dame Law Review) and Kevin Saunders (Akron Law Review) and in various books on "deontic logic" which is the logic of "obligation" (or duty) and "permission" (or privilege). See also some articles and texts by the Finish logician Georg Henrik von Wright, especially the 1951 article. Professor Hohfeld died in 1918, and his 1913 paper is one of the most often cited articles in legal jurisprudence. Some of Hohbfeld's terminology can be confusing. The terms "duty" and "privilege" are real "duals" of each rather than negatives. The 1917 paper also distinguished four different matters in which "right" is used -- (1) right in the strict sense, (2) udicial proceedings, (3) judgments and decreees, (4) enforcement, see 1964 book at 69.

Gentlemen from England (Borealis Books)
Published in Paperback by Minnesota Historical Society (October, 1993)
Average review score:

if you like Betsy.....I got this book on a whim, just because I love the Betsy-Tacy books, and figured that since those are autobiographical, then this would be what "Betsy" would have written. It is a good book- it tells the story of a misguided but sweet young man from England who jouneys to America to make a new life for himself. He encounters two extremely gothic characters who give the book an interesting twist, and has a passionate love affair. Through all his mishaps and passions, he finally discovers himself- and happiness- in a transported world of foxhunts, balls, and estates that must soon conform to new customs or perish. If you like the Betsy books, you will probably like this- it is an adult book, but still captures the youthful spirit and vibrance of the Betsy series. Lovelace writes with heart, taking the reader into her world.

Getting Published in Women's Studies: An International Interdisciplinary Professional Development Guide Mainly for Women
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (June, 1989)
Average review score:

All the help you need in one bookMost of us learn about publishing our research and developing a research profile by trial and error or, if we're fortunate, by picking up odd bits of information from senior colleagues committed to mentoring. This book goes a long way toward providing a one-stop shop for junior (and not so junior) academics wanting to learn how to get a research career together. Whether it's advice on preparing articles for submission to prestigious journals or knowing what type of work your first book should ideally be, Wheeler's advice is clear, detailed and well-considered. I have used the book myself and find I'm constantly recommending it to graduate students and senior colleagues alike. I'm so pleased to find it's still in print as it's an amazingly valuable resource. And don't be put off my the reference to 'women's studies' in the title, this book is of relevance to anyone in the humanities and social sciences wanting to learn the ropes.

Ghosts of the Haunted Coast
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Publishing of California (August, 1986)
Average review score:

Best of the bunchAs a collector of local ghost books, I picked this up on a trip up the California coast. Senate is really the most entertaining author in the genre, rivalled only by Hans Holzer. In contrast to other regional ghost tale collectors, Senate presents his tales in the first person, as he and his colleagues investigated them. This is in contrast to the typical method of simply presenting the direct accounts of regular folks who've had paranormal experiences. It makes the book much more engrossing and at times quite creepy. The volume is slim and so are the accounts, but especially if you are drawn to fictional ghost stories, this book will definitely satisfy.

The Grand Canal
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (09 February, 2002)
Average review score:

Loved it!This book really shows off the beauty of the Grand Canal with all of it's palaces and other buildings. One really gets the feeling of what life was like back during the height of the Serenissima. The interior shots are stunning. And the information given for each building is fascinating. Even the non-descript houses and buildings get page time... A great book.

Hard Stuff: The Autobiography of Coleman Young
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (February, 1994)
Average review score:

No nonsense approach to urban problems--Great!I've had this book for a couple years now but only recently found the time to read it. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. Hard Stuff is great as a history of Detroit, a sociology of racism, and an analysis of tense urban/suburban relations. I think it is an extremely valuable resource for its honest look at the problems besetting Detroit and probably many other urban areas. Young's understandable rage with the Reagan/Bush adminstration's evisceration of urban policy comes through strongly, and is rather enlightening. If America is to truly rebuild its "Detroits", as Young notes, serious attention must be given to rapid transit, economic empowerment, and community policing. There are many great ideas in this book, and it should be required reading for urban planners, journalists, historians, and city officials everywhere. Young fought the establishment his whole life because he insisted that things could be better. Now gone from us, his book should help continue his efforts to force a reluctant system to address horrible problems which, in their continued existence, lower everyone's quality of life.
